Networks Course

Featuring NetLook the Network Simulator

A suite of interactive tools and supporting teaching materials aimed at supporting the teaching of Networks. Includes:

NetLook - From modems to networks. A hands-on interactive experience of how a network achieves communication at the logical and transport levels. Modems: This program demonstrates data transmission at the lowest level. You get to see the individual bits of a byte as they are sent along the cable. The words you entered are converted to binary numbers and transmitted one byte at a time. During transmission the analogue wave diagram of the sounds sent down the telephone wire is displayed.

Multiplexors allow several computers to communicate in pairs using a common cable. The Multiplexors program demonstrates the use of one cable for communication between 3 pairs of computers. To send, type something in to a sender’s text box and click on send. The message will then be transmitted and the receiving computer will get it character by character. This is a demonstration of the most common multiplexing technique.

Create your own packets and send them from any computer to any other. See your data propagate and collide. See error checking and retransmission in action. Graphical animated representation of data flows and collisions. Text captions describe current network operations.
